There is a lot of weapons grade stupidty in YA novels of the kind you describe here, especially in those ghastly Twiglet novels and their ilk (twiglets are a kind of crisp here in the UK, not sure if you get them in the US - anyway, I've always called the Twilight series Twiglet, and now I can't seem to get out of the habit).
