There is an increasingly irritating because-we-can tendency among filmmakers to art-direct films to within in an inch of their lives. True artistry is captured in camera, with post production tweaks minimal. However, digital tools have are often irresistible toys when they should be left well alone. It really is immensely irritating. Plus the tendency to make everything "dark" as you say, is maddening.
