This is a superb essay. I'm in agreement with much of your analysis, especially what you say about the finite nature of the human mind and how that is explored in gothic fiction. In the past, I've talked about gothic literature featuring both outer and inner labyrinths - the setting, which you highlight, and the inner turmoil of the protagonist.
