This is a well-written article, but I don't agree that the storytelling in the film was bad. My wife and children, who have not read the novel, found it wholly gripping, not boring at all.
Villeneuve sets up the colonial brutality of the Harkonnens rather well (via Chani). When they leave Arrakis, seemingly inexplicably, it immediately feels suspicious, and it sets up a mystery of sorts. We sense a trap is being laid, but rather than spell out the details immediately, as Herbert does in the novel, we are drip fed much of the Harkonnen material from chapter 2 throughout the first half of the film (for instance, how they are assisted by the Sardaukar, how the Emperior's involvement must be kept secret, etc) which allows for much better pacing. Contrary to what you say here, this intrigued my wife and children, rather than bored them.
Still, that is just their opinions. Here's my review of the film, if you're interested. I loved it.
