This is an extremely valuable comment, thank you. I say that because I've previously interacted with Vietnam veterans on Medium who felt Platoon was more accurate and that Apocalypse Now wasn't. Obviously, I wasn't there, and therefore can't have an opinion either way, but I am a cineaste, and both are important films, to my mind. Platoon is in a more traditional, brutally realistic, war-is-hell tale, and whilst one could argue that also applies to Apocalypse Now, I think that film is less about the politics and more about deep and dark spiritual probings into the souls of men, and the evil that they do (Kurtz's speech about the inoculated arms is a good example about how such horror can make a man go insane).
