This is an odd one for me, as I used to think that too. But more recently, I've begrudged Cameron's win for Titanic less and less. It's certainly a one-dimensional love story and a blunt instrument of a disaster film, but I think it is an effective blunt instrument nonetheless. I admire Cameron's raw ambition, and I think he achieved something quite magnificent. LA Confidential is probably the better film, but I don't know... Titanic is truly spectacular, especially on a big screen.
