This isn't necessarily a requirement for me. A film should have the right ending, not necessarily a happy one. It would be absurd to end The Godfather Part II with Michael forgives Fredo, reconciles with Kay, goes legitimate in all his business interests, etc, etc.

Of course, I could also cite films with needlessly dark and unhappy endings when something more positive would have been appropriate. This cuts both ways. :)
