Three things:

1) Andrea Riseborough gave a great performance in To Leslie, and whatever the upshot here, she should not be penalised. However, I also agree that Danielle Deadwyler was terrific, and should probably have been nominated. Why not expand the categories, akin to what happens with the Best Picture category?

2) What's really going on here is that powerful people are pissed off that all the corporate and financial heft behind the schmoozing, gifts, pay-offs, and corruption within the Academy didn't work on this occasion. I see this as a David and Goliath story, and I know whose side I'm on.

3) To truly level the playing field, they ought to bring in strict rules across the board for all campaigning, limiting the money that can be spent, to ensure the indies get a look-in and aren't smothered by the major releases with big studio money for campaigning. Or indeed vice versa. Ultimately, in an ideal world. it should only be about one thing, regardless of all other considerations (including diversity box-ticking): The best performances.
