To me, the whole point of storytelling is putting yourself in someone else's shoes. I don't believe in putting any social or cultural restrictions on that. Like all storytelling, it will either be done badly or well, or sometimes in a subjective sliding scale between the two extremes. So yes, it may be difficult but it is absolutely not impossible for people to write outside their gender/racial/sexual experience.
