I must give director Peter Jackson some props for where he does, I think, understand Tolkien. In his depiction of Saruman, and in particular the way Saruman overhauls Orthanc, turning it from organic wonder-garden to industrial slag-heap. Jackson films it as horror and desecration and he does so brilliantly.
