With my children, especially the eldest, I think they are more like you. My eldest constantly disappeared inside his own head in the way you describe in this piece. He's 17 now, but he still talks about "needing to be in his own Universe". I did the same as a child, so I relate, obviously. As an adult, my Universes end up on paper.
This meant that playing with him was easy, because if we were out in the woods, I could immediately suggest, say, a tiger stalking us, and he'd instantly be in the zone, so to speak.
