… man of action in the partnership, the brawn to Holmes’ brain. And most importantly for the reader, when Holmes patiently explains how he comes to solve a particular case to Watson, he is also explaining it to us.

Watson is a great foil, and I don't like it when he is portrayed as a buffoon (for instance, in the otherwise splendid Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce starring series from the 1930s and 1940s).
