Well, it shouldn't have beaten either of those films (or The Thin Red Line, for that matter, which was also nominated). However, on balance, my verdicts for the Best Picture/Best Director awards that year would have been Best Picture to The Truman Show and Best Director to Saving Private Ryan (which it did win). From a directing perspective, Ryan was hugely influential. As a film overall, The Truman Show wins on points.
