1971 was a particularly nasty year for cinema, with the likes of Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange, Siegel’s Dirty Harry, Ken Russell’s The Devils, and this film by Sam Peckinpah, all coming out within months of each other, some only weeks. The gritty Get Carter by Mike Hodges and The French Connection by William Friedkin also came out this year.
