What about something like The Babadook? It’s all about grief and guilt. I find it intensely moving, as well as scary.

Or what about the ambiguity of something like Under the Shadow? Is there really a demon? Or is it all in their heads, considering they are dealing with war PTSD from bombings, not to mention the oppressive religious authorities. Under the Shadow is as much feminist critique of fundamentalist Islam as it is supernatural horror.

Both films deal in realism amid the scares, I’d argue. It’s really grounded and relatable.
