What you're proposing here is too miserable for the requirements of the genre, in my opinion. This film needed to work in its own right without suffering prequelitis, and I think it does. What's more, I think we do get to see his naivety and how he learns to shut out people he can't trust in Wonka as it stands, whilst also delivering the right ending - ie, a feelgood one. :)
