When I first saw this at the cinema in 2000 during the original run, I was similarly struck by how much Gladiator borrowed from earlier sword and sandals flicks. Most notably, The Fall of the Roman Empire (this is pretty much a remake), along with bits of Ben Hur, Spartacus, and Quo Vadis. :)
