Which is the start and end of matters for me. No matter what one thinks of Wayne's offscreen behaviour (and there are plenty of things to criticise) the films are art. They are separate, and speak for themselves. No one will ever rob me of my love for Stagecoach, The Searchers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and so forth, just because modern society has its knickers in a twist over toxic masculinity. Besides, the films themselves are often much deeper than people give them credit for (Wayne's character in The Searchers is deeply troubled, for instance).
