With all due respect to you as well... I think you want this film to be something it isn't, or at least, never set out to be. I don't think Civil War is meant to reflect contemporary polarisation of current political issues. as it doesn't discuss these issues. It invents a parallel universe, yes, but I don't think it is praising those striving to be "politically factual". If anything, it critiques and even satirises that idea, given what happens in the end with Jessie. As I said, definitely an All About Eve type scenario there, with a bit of The Hurt Locker thrown in. Journalistic ethics are questioned throughout. Depicting something doesn't necessarily equate to endorsing something.
Nor do I think it is saying there needs to be a bigger threat for both political sides to unify against. It's more a film designed to show what a modern day US civil war would actually look like, intended primarily to thrill on a visceral level (which I think it succeeds in very well - the scene with Jesse Plemons is an absolute nail-biter). Its secondary concern is to shock and horrify in a war-is-hell sort of way, which I think it does better during the journey to DC than in the DC set finale, where things all get a bit Call of Duty. As I've said elsewhere, I think it does have a political position (ie anti-Trump), but it is subtle, not wanting to alienate Republicans, but to get both sides to stop, think, and realise that whatever the points of political disagreement might be, the outcome of civil war is not one that is desirable in any way.
