Yes, and perhaps Tolkien - a legendary author but hardly a cinematic connoisseur - would have disapproved. But Jackson makes the right call here, I'd argue. He adapts the novels. He optimises it for cinema, and it is great cinema. And I'd argue it is true to the spirit of the novel.
