Yes - But Kubrick's decision is justified for one reason only: He replaced it with something just as good or arguably better. The same applies to all film adaptation arguments from Jaws to Planet of the Apes to The Godfather to The Iron Giant (which bears absolutely no resemblance to the Ted Hughes source novel whatsoever, save the bit with the giant eating scrap metal).
