Yes, I agree. Blood and gore are not always needed, though sometimes one key bloody splash makes the point well. Alien is an example. After the chestburster, we don't really see the bloody details of the rest of the deaths. We don't need to. Our imagination fills in the blanks far more effectively.

As for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, it relentlessly terrorises the viewer to great effect.
