Yes indeed. I was one of those cult-like fans. I dreaded the release of Peter Jackson's films, because I was so worried he'd mess it up. Thankfully he didn't. I would add that Ralph Bakshi's animated version of The Lord of the Rings (from 1978) could be considered cult under certain circumstances.
