Yes, it has become trendy to bash Bono (and U2 in general) and that really pisses me off. Yes, he can be a bit insufferable at times, but damn the music is good. And this album is incredible. That one-two-three punch of Where the Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, and With or Without You is just astonishing (and there are plenty of other major highlights on the album too, such as Running to Stand Still).
Also, back to Bono being preachy, sometimes his anger is entirely justified. This blistering performance of Sunday Bloody Sunday, for example, is pure rock and roll rage, shot through with a genuine plea for an end to the madness.
