You are absolutely bang-on about emailing to yourself. That's saved me on a few occasions too.

My procedure is now thus:

1) Work offline (I don't trust "the cloud" and only copy and paste into places like Medium drafts once I'm finished).

2) Hit save like a lunatic every ten minutes.

3) Email files (work in progress or otherwise) to myself and my mother (off-site back up).

4 Download files to USB drive.

5) In the case of my novels and short stories, print work-in-progress hard copies.
