You definitely need to see early John Woo films - The Killer and Hard Boiled in particular (the latter I consider one of the all-time greatest action films).

His Hollywood output is less remarkable (although Face/Off is a lot of fun) but I would also recommend some of his latter day work, such as Red Cliff, which is stunning (although I've only seen the 150-minute international cut, not the four hour original).
